TEEN CHALLENGE
THIS WAS THE MOST AMAZING BANQUET THAT I HAVE EVER BEEN TO. OKAY IT IS THE ONLY BANQUET THAT I HAVE EVER BEEN TO. IT WAS THE ANNUAL TEEN CHALLENGE BANQUET IN ALBUQUERQUE. FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT HAVE NEVER HEARD OF TEEN CHALLENGE, IT IS AN ORGANIZATION FOR TEENS ON DRUGS/ALCOHOL. IT IS RUN BY A CHRISTIAN COUPLE. THEIR MAIN FOCUS IS GETTING THE KIDS OFF DRUGS AND GETTING THEM TO GOD. THEY HAVE TO PUT THEMSELVES THERE AND FOLLOW CONTRACT FOR 18-24 MONTHS. THEY ARE ABLE TO GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL WHILE IN THE PROGRAM. I ACTUALLY SAW 2 GRADUATE LAST NIGHT. THE CHOIR WAS AMAZING. A FEW OF THE GIRLS GAVE THEIR TESTOMONIES. THEY WERE HEART BREAKING. HOWEVER, THEY SEEMS SO HAPPY AND ENCOURAGED NOW. THEIR WORDS THROUGH SONG AND TESTIMONY MADE ME REALIZE THAT THERE IS HOPE FOR BETTER DAYS. THE FIRST GIRL TO SPEAK HAD BEEN ADOPTED AT AGE 2 AND WAS ON DRUGS BY AGE 12. SO, I HOPE THINGS SPEED UP AND I HAVE MAYA HOME BEFORE SHE IS OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER BEING IN FOSTER CARE AND HER BIRTHMOTHER LEAVING HER.
my internet is playing up - so I'm sorry if you get multiple comments from me.
Sounds like you had a wonderful time, how fab to hear testimonies like that. Sign me up for the next one! lol
Having been a foster parent, I always felt that the children were 'forgotten' by the system. I always aimed to make the time they had with me a loving, warm, caring, family time in hope that when the time came they would return and know that 'normality'. There isn't a day I don't pray for them and love them.
How wonderful that this couple also feels called to care for children and young people. After all one person can make all the difference!!
What a great program to be involved with. I teach at the middle school level but it is a program for children with behavior needs. The majority of my kids are in foster care or living with family guardians. They have been at some point part of the juvenile detention system, but upon re-entering the public school system, put into my program. I have found myself grasping at times for better advocacy for these kids, sometimes successfully, others not so much. I've become aware that I cannot help everyone, can't take them all home with me, so I do my best to move forward and always try to be a positive force in their lives. It must have been an amazing night for you. Such wonderful things can happen when people care about kids!
P.s. thanks for the well wishes, i'm feeling a little better
I am a single mother with a daughter from Guatemala. I brought her home on August 21st, 2007. I am loving every second of motherhood. Maya is the love of my life. I can't imagine life without her. I thank God everyday that she is home in my arms.

I am a former foster child and current child advocate...
Please share this with the Christian couple that leads "Teen Challenge"...
There is a new national organization that has been created to support foster youth and foster alumni. It is called Foster Care Alumni of America.
The youth who spent time in foster care and struggled with drugs might find additional support and a voice there. (I am a member).

Also, thank you for loving Maya and adopting her...
